Weiteveen comenzó en la década de 1850 por colonos hannoverianos que se establecieron en el Amsterdamscheveld. Construyeron casas de césped, empezaron a excavar el musgo y a plantar alforfón en los campos quemados. En 1919, se construyó la Iglesia de María Reina de la Paz en el pueblo. En 1924, apareció un asentamiento protestante. Hasta 1954, el área era conocida como Nieuw-Schoonebekerveld. En 1954, la frontera entre Emmen y Schoonebeek fue redibujada, y los dos asentamientos se fusionaron como Weiteveen. El nombre es una combinación de alforfón y pantano.
