La bomba de Echten se encuentra justo al norte del pueblo de Echten, en el dique del Tjeukemeer, y drenaba el Veenpolder, que fue diqueado entre 1856 y 1859. Inicialmente, el polder se drenaba con energía eólica. Alrededor de 1865 se construyó la primera bomba de vapor para el Veenpolder. La nueva bomba, que se construyó en 1913, también era una bomba de vapor. En 1925 se decidió reemplazar la energía de vapor por bombeo eléctrico. La chimenea innecesaria fue demolida unos años después.
