El Parque Nacional De Hoge Veluwe es un área natural holandesa única en varios aspectos. No solo es uno de los parques nacionales más antiguos de los Países Bajos, sino que también pertenece a las áreas naturales de tierras bajas más grandes del noroeste de Europa, especialmente si incluimos otras áreas naturales de Veluwe. Además, en el parque nacional hay mucho espacio destinado a elementos culturalmente históricos, arquitectura y artes visuales.
El área que ahora forma De Hoge Veluwe debe su estatus a la pareja Kröller-Müller, que la compró en 1909 como propiedad con la función principal de ofrecer un terreno de caza. Para la caza se introdujeron, entre otros, muflones, jabalíes y ciervos, e incluso durante algún tiempo, canguros. También continuó la explotación forestal. Cuando a principios de los años treinta la pareja enfrentó problemas financieros, se intentó vender la propiedad a Natuurmonumenten. Esto fracasó, y el Estado proporcionó los 1.000.000 de florines necesarios para comprar el área en 1935 a Anton Kröller.
