El nombre Maashorst se refiere al hecho de que el Mosa fluía aquí hace aproximadamente 125.000 años. A través de diversos procesos geológicos, el curso del Mosa se ha desplazado cada vez más hacia el este, en parte debido al levantamiento del Peelhorst y al hundimiento de la Slenk de Venlo, por donde actualmente fluye el Mosa. El Mosa ha depositado mucha grava y piedras en el área del parque paisajístico.
En el borde occidental de la zona se encuentra la falla Peelrand, con una segunda dislocación paralela. Estas fallas crean zonas donde ocurre una fuerte afluencia local, o sea, manantial. Perpendicular a la falla, varios arroyos fluyen en dirección suroeste, como el Kleinwijkse Loop, el Grote Wetering, el Menselse Loop y el Kraaivenloop.
