Es un milagro que durante la voladura del castillo de Valkenburg se hayan salvado la Puerta de Berkel y la Puerta de Grendel. La Puerta de Berkel fue construida alrededor de 1335 y formaba parte de la defensa medieval de la ciudad.
En ese entonces, la puerta también tenía un puente levadizo sobre el foso de la ciudad. La Puerta de Berkel era utilizada principalmente por los viajeros en dirección a Oud-Valkenburg, Schin op Geul y Aquisgrán. En 2007-2008, la puerta fue completamente renovada.
Las dos grandes torres de piedra caliza de las que consta la puerta ahora están conectadas por un puente peatonal de madera.
