En 1856 se prohibió hacer sus necesidades en la calle en Ámsterdam. Para evitar que los oscuros callejones y lugares apartados se convirtieran aún más en letrinas, la ciudad instaló 250 urinarios de hierro fundido que se pueden ver en varios lugares como cerca de la estación, Amstelveld, Prinsengracht y el Sarphatipark.
Estos urinarios de hierro fundido son llamados "curvas" debido a su forma y también "secretos". Esta última palabra ha evolucionado como un término despectivo.
