La historia de la Diócesis de Évora es antigua. Según la leyenda, el primer obispo fue San Mancio, pero D. Quinciano, cuyo nombre aparece en las actas del Concilio de Elvira en 303, es el primer obispo atestiguado de la diócesis. También aparecen como obispos legendarios San Bricio y San Jordán.
En 1166, tras la reconquista cristiana de la ciudad por Gerardo Sempavor, se rehabilita la diócesis, convirtiendo la mezquita en la primera catedral. De 1166 a 1540, habrá 33 obispos de Évora. En esa época forman la diócesis lo que ahora se llamaría el distrito de Portalegre, parte del distrito de Santarém, los distritos de Évora, Beja y parte del distrito de Setúbal, siendo sufragánea de la archidiócesis de Braga y después de la de Lisboa.
