Esta picota se encuentra delante del ayuntamiento.
Fue construida por decreto del cabildo en 1538 y se levanta sobre una base octogonal. El asta está torcida en forma de cuerda , al estilo manuelino. En la parte superior se encuentra la espada de la justicia, hecha de hierro, sostenida por un brazo que sobresale de la punta del chapitel. El capitel ostenta el escudo real . En los laterales de la base de la picota hay leyendas que hacen referencia a los distintos lugares de la ciudad.
Sustituyó a una picota de madera anterior en la Praça Velha. Las dos picotas convivieron durante varios años. En 1539, esta nueva picota en la Praça Nova fue destruida por un levantamiento popular . La picota fue reconstruida y trasladada en 1582 a la Praça da Ribeira, junto al río Ave y los astilleros. No fue hasta 1913 que volvió a este lugar junto al Ayuntamiento.
