El río Arkansas es un largo río del centro-sur de Estados Unidos que fluye en dirección sureste por los estados de Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma y Arkansas hasta desaguar en el río Misisipi. Tiene una longitud de 2364 km que lo sitúan como el cuarto río más largo de América del Norte —por detrás del Misuri, Misisipi y Bravo— y drena una cuenca de 435 123 km².
En antiguos mapas españoles y mexicanos aparece como Nexpentle es uno de los principales afluentes del río Misisipí.
