El primitivo monasterio e iglesia de San Agustín, que aparece en el mapa de Torriani de 1588 , se construyeron cerca de la antigua laguna para garantizar el abastecimiento de agua.
La iglesia, la torre y la entrada fueron construidas en el emplazamiento actual en el siglo XVIII.
El incendio del 2 de junio de 1964 destruyó la iglesia y con ella un patrimonio histórico-artístico de primer orden: estatuas como las del grupo que formaba la Virgen de la Cinta, San Agustín y Santa Mónica, o el Cristo de Burgos
