L'empereur François Ier Stéphane est mort le 18 août 1765 de manière inattendue d'un AVC au palais impérial d'Innsbruck, alors que la famille royale était présente à Innsbruck à l'occasion du mariage de l'archiduc Léopold avec Maria Ludovica d'Espagne. Sa femme, Marie-Thérèse, en fut très affectée et le pleura profondément. Pour « la mémoire éternelle », elle fonda encore cette même année, sur le lieu de décès de son mari, le couvent laïque des dames nobles.
