Artevelde a négocié avec le roi anglais Édouard III une position neutre pour Gand dans la guerre franco-anglaise. Cela assurait l'importation de la laine à Gand, l'artère de l'industrie du lin gantoise !
Par pure gratitude, les Gantois couronnèrent le roi anglais sur la Vrijdagmarkt roi de France.
Édouard III traitait Artevelde comme s'il était le 'prince de Flandre', ce qui bien sûr ne plaisait pas à tout le monde. Dans le dos des Gantois, Artevelde avait promis au roi anglais un soutien financier pour financer sa guerre contre la France. C'était la goutte qui faisait déborder le vase. En 1343, Jacob dut fuir en Angleterre après avoir été accusé de parjure et à son retour en 1345, une révolte des tisserands éclata. Pendant la révolte, Jacob fut mis à mort dans sa maison sur la Kalandeberg.
