La route de Bruxelles est une artère de circulation importante datant de 1704. Cet axe de transport était la principale voie économique entre Gand et Bruxelles du 18ème siècle jusqu'au milieu du 20ème siècle. Après la construction de l'E5, devenue plus tard l'E40, l'axe a perdu son importance dans le transport. À plusieurs endroits, il coïncidait avec l'actuelle route de Bruxelles, mais à quelques endroits, les noms de rue "Ancienne route bruxelloise" font référence à son emplacement d'origine.
