Le marché du vendredi était également l'endroit où le roi anglais Édouard III était proclamé roi de France pendant la guerre France-Angleterre (14e siècle). Le fait que Gand était gouvernée par les Français à l'époque ne rendait pas la ville très populaire en France. Le choix était évidemment purement économique, puisque la production de lin à Gand dépendait de l'Angleterre pour l'approvisionnement en laine.
