Le parc Hanssens d'une superficie de 6 ha est situé près de la gare de Vilvoorde.
Ce parc a été créé il y a environ un siècle sur des terres marécageuses juste en dehors des remparts de la ville. Le parc a été conçu à la demande des autorités municipales, probablement en collaboration avec l'école de jardinage locale.
Le parc a été aménagé dans le style paysager anglais romantique, assez classique selon la tendance générale de l'époque. Au centre, un étang a été créé, utilisé comme étang à poissons. En fait, une ancienne cuvette d'eau a été façonnée pour s'intégrer dans l'ensemble du parc. À noter, le joli pont suspendu en fer au-dessus d'un rétrécissement de l'étang. Ce pont suspendu a été construit à 3,5 m de hauteur au-dessus du niveau de l'eau.
Le parc Hanssens a été rouvert en 2004 après une rénovation approfondie.
