La forêt de Heidebos se situe sur le grand banc de sable de Maldegem-Stekene, entre Moerbeke et Wachtebeke. Le relief y est caractérisé par la présence d'une topographie de dunes avec des hauteurs composées de sables mobiles. Les variations de niveau avec les pannes de sable recouvertes atteignent environ 3 à 4 mètres. Les zones sèches et plus élevées étaient trop infertiles pour être intégrées dans la superficie agricole permanente.
