Alken est une commune néerlandophone de Belgique située en Région flamande dans la province de Limbourg, non loin de Hasselt.
Le nom de Alken apparaît pour la première fois dans les livres d'histoire en 1066 sous le nom de Alleche. Dès 1180 elle est appelée officiellement Alken, mais la tradition populaire l'appelle encore souvent Alleke. Alken était à l'époque une enclave de la Principauté de Liège dans le comté de Looz. De nombreux Princes-Évêques de Liège y ont eu leur résidence d'été.
