Dans la gare, Karel van de Woestijne a été pendant deux heures en juillet 1916 le "prisonnier" des Allemands. Bien qu'il ait obtenu une autorisation préalable, il ne pouvait pas entrer dans la ville de campagne de Gand et a dû attendre deux heures le train suivant : "J'ai acheté des cigares. J'ai goûté toutes les marques disponibles là-bas. Entre-temps, j'ai étudié la gare : je l'avais jusqu'ici méprisée ; maintenant je la trouvais extraordinairement bien construite, car la captivité amène à juger l'architecture avec indulgence. (...) Je me suis aventuré jusqu'à la salle d'attente. À l'intérieur de cette salle d'attente, on pouvait voir un comptoir monumental dans le style néo-gothique, équipé de pompes à bière brillantes."
