La ligne de Chemin de Fer Bruxelles-Luxembourg fut inaugurée en 1858. En 1873 les Chemins de Fer de l’État belge devinrent propriétaires du réseau ferroviaire et une nouvelle gare fut aménagée, remplaçant le bâtiment de bois et de pierre qui accueillait jusque-là les voyageurs. La gare fut construite en calcaire lorrain et pierre bleue sur les plans de l’architecte provincial VAN DE WIJNGAERT (1884-1885) puis ses abords aménagés, comprenant entre autres de remarquables constructions de style Art Nouveau et le modeste quartier des cheminots (Schoppach). L’avenue de la Gare a été totalement rénovée en 2002-2003. La statue de Mercure est l’œuvre du sculpteur Bettina SCHOLL-SABBATINI.
