Le Congoberg fait référence aux nombreux houilleurs et mineurs, qui sont retournés dans leurs familles sans être lavés de la mine de charbon et encore noirs comme oelje (du français houille = charbon). Vollezele a compté de nombreux mineurs qui se rendaient en train (ligne de chemin de fer 123) aux mines wallonnes. La plupart des charbonniers vivaient dans le pauvre hameau d’Achterdenbos.
