Le domaine de Merkemveld tire son nom de la famille d'Outryve de Merckem, qui a fait reboiser cette ancienne lande vers la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Au milieu de la forêt, le château de Baesveld a été construit. Le magnifique parc du château a été en partie divisé après la Seconde Guerre mondiale pour des résidences de week-end. Depuis 1948, un centre de séjour pour les scouts et guides de Flandre asbl y est également établi, et depuis peu, une aire de jeux a été ajoutée. La zone de Doeveren jouxte Merkemveld et se compose principalement de forêts, avec des prairies et des champs à côté.
