La Grande Route à Houthalen-Helchteren a fait la une des journaux en 2018 après l'enquête sur la pollution en Flandre intitulée CurieuzeNeuzen. La qualité de l'air le long de cette route était la pire en Flandre. Malheureusement, c'est une tendance pour de nombreuses routes à deux voies, comme l'a révélé l'étude de CurieuzeNeuzen. Selon Meysman de CurieuzeNeuzen, la situation est très préoccupante pour les routes à deux voies et près d'un carrefour où les bords sont enclavés par des constructions.
