Fort de Merksem -- Le Fort Merksem est un fort de type 'Fort avec réduit et douves inondées' et faisait partie de la Ceinture d'Antwerpen. Il a été construit en briques de 1871 à 1882 et a été renforcé par la suite, en 1911 et 1912, avec du béton non armé. Cela n’a cependant pas aidé car au début de la Première Guerre mondiale, les Allemands disposaient de la Grande Bertha, un mortier capable de percer le béton à grande distance. Au début de la guerre, le fort n'est pas entré en action et a même été détruit juste avant la chute d'Anvers en octobre 1914 par l'armée belge pour éviter qu'il ne tombe intact entre les mains des Allemands. Plusieurs associations y ont désormais leur siège et il y a aussi un terrain de sport.
