Le noyau du village de Machelen-aan-Leie s'est formé sur une élévation, dans le virage extérieur droit de la Leie, appelé "Machelen-put". La forme triangulaire typique de la place du village pourrait indiquer une implantation franque. Les Francs saliques ont traversé le Rhin à la fin de l'Antiquité et se sont installés dans ces zones (Chlodovech-Chlodwig-Clovis a été baptisé à Reims en 504). Les premières mentions du village datent de 697, 820 et 830 dans les annales de l'abbaye de Saint-Pierre de Gand sous les noms "Machlinio, Machlinum, ou Mageleno", selon le professeur Gysseling probablement dérivé de l'ancien germanique "magalium", signifiant puissant, fort.
