Elle est située dans le nord-est de la Belgique et est placée sous la tutelle de la Région flamande. La province est limitrophe des Pays-Bas , plus précisément du Limbourg néerlandais et du Brabant-Septentrional, et, à l'intérieur du pays, à l'ouest, de la province d'Anvers et du Brabant flamand et au sud de la province de Liège. La province possède aussi une exclave entre les Pays-Bas et la province de Liège : la commune des Fourons, lieu de problèmes intercommunautaires entre Flamands et Wallons.
