Le jeune Hubert Malfait (1898-1971) reçoit de bons conseils en tant qu'aspirant artiste d'Émile Claus (qui était un client fidèle dans le café du père de Malfait à Astene). Claus encourage Malfait à travailler dans la nature et Malfait lui montre ses premières petites peintures. Plus tard, Malfait se développera en tant qu'expressionniste. “Les gendarmes” s'approchent du carrefour avec la route entre Gand et Courtrai depuis le village. Ils regardent presque de manière visionnaire à travers la route en direction de l'actuel “place Malfait”.
