Marly est une commune suisse du canton de Fribourg, située dans le district de la Sarine. Le nom allemand Mertenlach n'est pratiquement plus utilisé.
Il semblerait que le nom du lieu remonte à un citoyen galloromain Martilius ou Martiliacus qui vivait dans une villa sur la colline Râpettes. Le lieu est mentionné la première fois dans un document de 1055 sous le nom de in Marlensi. Plus tard apparaissent les appellations Marliei , Marllie , Marlie , Mallie , Mallye , Marliez , Marlye et Maillié . En allemand, Mertellach est connue comme première version.
