Cette porte a été construite par les Romains à la fin du deuxième siècle (vers 180 après J.-C.). La porte bien conservée (trente-six mètres de large ; trente mètres de haut) faisait partie d'une muraille de six kilomètres de long. Elle constitue le souvenir le plus clair de l'époque romaine. Elle doit son nom de porte noire à la pierre de sable usée.
