Getelo est situé au nord-ouest de Nordhorn à la frontière des Pays-Bas. La commune fait partie de la commune associée d'Uelsen, dont le siège administratif se trouve dans la commune d'Uelsen.
Le mot allemand standard « Geiß » est surtout connu grâce au conte des frères Grimm « Le Loup et les Sept Chevreaux ». La variante bas-allemande « Gete, Jete » pour « Geiß, Ziege » est attestée dans « Gietelo », au 13ème siècle « Ghettlo », qui évoque « Getelo », 1188 Ghetlo. Dans la deuxième partie, il y a « -lo ». Dans l'est des Pays-Bas, de nombreux noms de lieux se terminent par « lo », par exemple Almelo, Hengelo, Markelo et Venlo, parfois aussi avec deux « oo » comme Hoenderloo et Dwingeloo.
