Holzen est une commune située dans le nord du district de Holzminden en Basse-Saxe et fait partie de la communauté collective d'Eschershausen-Stadtoldendorf. Holzen se trouve à la jonction des chaînes de montagnes d'Ith et de Hils. Le lieu se compose de deux zones, le village de Holzen et Holzen-Ith.
Des traces de peuplement au Néolithique et de rituels sacrificiels ont été trouvées dans les grottes autour de Holzen. Des objets découverts dans la grotte de Rothestein ainsi qu'une entrée de grotte reconstituée sont exposés au musée d'État de Hanovre.
