Neumühl faisait partie auparavant du district urbain de Hamborn, qui a été fusionné en 1929 avec le district urbain de Duisbourg, et a été nommé d'après le Nouveau Moulin du 14ème siècle, autour duquel le quartier de Neumühl s'est installé. Directement à la frontière actuelle de la ville avec Oberhausen se trouvait la maison Temminghoven, existant depuis le 13ème siècle au plus tard, démolie au 20ème siècle.
