Winterberg est situé au centre du Rothaargebirge. Cette chaîne de montagnes basse ne dépasse pas 850 m. Le nom viendrait de Rod-Hard-Gebirge, ce qui signifierait que les forêts de cette chaîne de montagnes ont en grande partie été déboisées. Elle fait partie du Rheinisches Schiefergebirge. La montagne est riche en minéraux. Près de Winterberg, par exemple, de l'argent a été trouvé.
