L'école a été fondée en 1779 et est le plus ancien gymnase de Kassel. Le Friedrichsgymnasium met l'accent sur les langues étrangères et les matières artistiques dans son programme scolaire, mais propose également d'autres offres, par exemple, il dispose de l'un des clubs d'aviron scolaires les plus performants d'Allemagne. La zone de recrutement du gymnase s'étend, en plus de la ville de Kassel, au district de Kassel et aux districts environnants jusqu'au sud de la Basse-Saxe.
