Le monastère de Heiligkreuztal a été fondé dans la première moitié du XIIIe siècle sous l’influence du cardinal cistercien Conrad d’Urach et de l’abbé Eberhard II de Salem. En 1227, un groupe de religieuses d’Altheim acquit un domaine à Wasserschaff et déménagea leur établissement. Le nom a été changé en Heiligkreuztal et en 1221, les moniales ont adopté les règles cisterciennes. En 1233, la congrégation a été incorporée dans l’ordre cistercien malgré l’opposition de l’ordre à l’inclusion de monastères féminins. Le monastère reçut les privilèges pontificaux et impériaux.
