La Garte est un ruisseau de 23 km de long qui prend sa source à l’est de Weißenborn à une altitude de 303 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer. Les villes qu’il traverse sont Beienrode, Kerstlingerode, Rittmarshausen, Wöllmarshausen, Benniehausen, Klein Lengden et Diemarden. Le ruisseau rejoint la rivière Leine au sud de Göttingen. Avec une chute de 151 m, le ruisseau a une pente moyenne de 6,6 ‰. Le bassin versant est de 87 km2. Il est classé comme un cours d’eau de troisième ordre selon le système allemand de classement des masses d’eau.
La vallée fluviale est considérée localement comme une sorte d’unité micro-culturelle, particulièrement solidifiée par le défunt Garte Valley Railway, un chemin de fer à voie étroite de 750 mm allant de Göttingen à Duderstadt.
