Le parc naturel du Harz est situé dans le sud de la Basse-Saxe, dans les districts de Goslar et de Göttingen. Le parc naturel situé dans le Harz a été fondé en 1960 et couvre environ 790 km². L'organisme responsable est l'association régionale du Harz.
Le parc naturel comprend le Haut-Harz sans les parties de Basse-Saxe du parc national du Harz. Sa frontière est et sud-est fait partie du Bande Verte d’Allemagne. Il borde le parc naturel Harz/Saxe-Anhalt environ à l'est et le parc naturel du Sud-Harz environ au sud-est, l'ensemble du Harz étant une grande zone protégée.
