Le chemin cyclable Kyffhäuser traverse Tilleda. De 1915 à 1966, il y avait un arrêt sur la ligne de chemin de fer connue sous le nom de Kyffhäuser-Kleinbahn reliant Berga-Kelbra à Artern.
Au début du 9ème siècle, Tilleda est mentionnée par écrit sous le nom de Dullide dans un répertoire des biens du monastère de Hersfeld, construit par l'archevêque Lullus de Mayence. Le développement du village est étroitement lié à l'histoire du palais royal de Tilleda.
