Aurich a été mentionnée pour la première fois dans un document officiel en 1276 sous le nom d'Aurechove. De 1811 à 1814, la ville a été le chef-lieu de l'ancien département français de l'Ems-Oriental.
Du 21 octobre 1944, jusqu'au 23 décembre 1944, un camp de concentration nazi est construit à Aurich. Le camp était un camp annexe au camp de concentration de Neuengamme. Les déportés étaient forcés de travailler à la construction de fossés anti-chars autour de la ville d'Aurich.
