Kohtla-Järve est la quatrième plus grande ville d'Estonie, elle forme la Commune urbaine de Kohtla-Järve.
Elle est située au nord-est du pays, dans la région administrative du Virumaa oriental.
La plupart des habitants de Kohtla-Järve parlent le russe, bien qu'à partir de 1990 l'estonien devienne la langue utilisée dans la vie administrative. La ville est très industrialisée et compte une forte activité pétrolière.
