Le Stade olympique Lluís Companys, en hommage au président de la Generalitat de Catalogne, Lluís Companys, fusillé par le régime franquiste sur la montagne de Montjuïc en 1940, est situé sur la montagne de Montjuïc. Il a été conçu par l'architecte Pere Domènech i Roura et inauguré en 1929 à l'occasion de l'Exposition universelle de Barcelone. Dans les années soixante, il a été sous-utilisé et ses gradins ont commencé à montrer d'inquiétants signes de ruine. La célébration des Jeux olympiques de Barcelone en 1992 a permis sa rénovation par l'équipe d'architectes Correa-Milà-Margarit-Buixadé et avec la participation de l'italien Gregotti.
