Le 27 novembre 1983, le Boeing 747-283B, numéro HK-2910 de la compagnie colombienne Avianca, s'écrasa près de Madrid en Espagne. Des 169 passagers et 23 membres d'équipage, 181 furent tués et 11 ont survécu.
Plusieurs écrivains et intellectuels latino-américains de retour de Paris figurent parmi les victimes, notamment l'écrivain mexicain Jorge Ibargüengoitia, le poète péruvien Manuel Scorza, le critique uruguayen Ángel Rama et l'universitaire argentine Marta Traba. La pianiste catalane Rosa Sabater, qui se rendait en tournée en Amérique du Sud, figure également parmi les victimes.
