La station est située à la fin de la ligne de chemin de fer St-Pierre-d'Albigny-Bourg-Saint-Maurice. La station est desservie par des TGV (à grande vitesse), des Lunéa (trains de nuit) et des TER (locaux) opérés par la SNCF. Pendant les mois d'hiver, des services Eurostar en provenance de Londres et des services Thalys en provenance d'Amsterdam et de Bruxelles se rendent à Bourg-Saint-Maurice. La station a été largement reconstruite pour les Jeux Olympiques d'hiver de 1992 à Albertville. La station dispose également de quelques voies de garage pour les trains de passagers lorsqu'ils ne sont pas en service.
