Moussey est l'une des communes ayant appartenu à l'abbaye de Senones, puis à la principauté de Salm jusqu'à la Révolution française.
Le nom de Moussey viendrait de Monticellus, petit mont. Le village est en effet sur une petite éminence au pied de laquelle coule un ruisseau dont le cours très rapide mérite bien le nom de Rabodeau [réf. nécessaire].
