Enlacée par la Moselle et son affluent droit, la Seille, traversée par le canal de Jouy-aux-Arches dans sa partie nord, Montigny-lès-Metz est urbanisée sur la quasi-totalité de son territoire. Sa densité de population est d’ailleurs supérieure à celle de Metz, sa voisine, préfecture de la Moselle et chef-lieu de la région Lorraine : 3 217 contre 2 804 habitants au km² ce qui en fait la quatrième ville du département avec 21 551 habitants après Thionville et Forbach qui ont le rang de sous-préfecture et juste devant Sarreguemines à population quasi-égale.
