Riom est une commune française située dans le département du Puy-de-Dôme, en région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Elle possède sa propre unité urbaine qui s'intègre à l'aire d'attraction de Clermont-Ferrand.Elle est depuis des siècles une ville rivale de Clermont-Ferrand, la capitale historique et culturelle de l'Auvergne. Elle fut néanmoins, au Moyen Âge, capitale de la Terre d'Auvergne puis du duché d'Auvergne, une des quatre principautés féodales auvergnates. Par son histoire et son patrimoine bâti la ville est classée Pays d'Art et d'histoire.
