Belfort est une commune française située dans le nord-est de la région Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Chef-lieu du Territoire de Belfort, la commune comptait 46 443 habitants en 2019. Elle est la principale commune et le cœur urbain d'une agglomération de 78 867 habitants.
Établie dans la trouée de Belfort, la cité est implantée sur une importante voie de communication où les premières activités humaines se manifestent dès la Préhistoire. Cet emplacement particulier joue un rôle important tout au long de son histoire, notamment au XIVe siècle, quand la cité est connue sous le nom de Bellumfortum. Cette situation stratégique au cœur de la trouée de Belfort a fait d'elle une place forte militaire et une cité de garnison aux frontières des mondes rhénan et rhodanien.
