Exposée à un climat méditerranéen, elle est drainée par le Coudoulous, le Souls et par un autre cours d'eau. Incluse dans les Cévennes, la commune possède un patrimoine naturel remarquable composé d'une zone naturelle d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique. Aulas est une commune rurale qui compte 456 habitants en 2019, après avoir connu un pic de population de 1 000 habitants en 1846. Elle est dans l'agglomération de Vigan et fait partie de l'aire d'attraction du Vigan. Ses habitants sont appelés les Aulasiens ou Aulasiennes.
