Lons-le-Saunier est le chef-lieu du département du Jura en Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Elle fait partie de la région culturelle et historique de Franche-Comté. La ville est située à une altitude de 243 mètres.Lons-le-Saunier doit son nom à ses sources salées, d'abord exploitées par les Romains, qui ont fait la fortune de familles de Bourgogne, de Vienne et de Chalon à partir du Moyen Âge, mais aussi de nombreuses abbayes et couvents.
