Au moment du siège de Rouen , la ville compte environ 70 000 habitants, ce qui en fait une des plus grandes villes de France. La prise de cette ville est cruciale pour s’emparer du duché de Normandie, clé du royaume pendant la guerre de Cent Ans.Depuis le rattachement de la Normandie au domaine royal français en 1204, la ville est défendue par le château de Rouen, imposant château fort construit par Philippe Auguste de 1204 à 1210, siège de l'autorité administrative et politique.
