Jusqu'en 1889 le cimetière de Ruaux ( village rattaché à la commune de Plombières-les-bains) jouxtait l'église Saint Jean Baptiste.
Devenu trop petit et pour raison d'hygiène, il fut décidé de le déménager sur la colline boisée, à 250 m à l'ouest de l'église fut désignée pour son calme. On construisit une chapelle toute en pierre pour veiller sur les restes des défunts enterrés sous ce qui apparaît aujourd'hui comme une grande croix tracée au sol..
Une chapelle y fut alors construite afin de veiller sur les défunts et nommée par les habitants de "Notre Dame de Consolation". Une messe en plein air y est célébrée chaque année depuis 1980.
